How to Prepare for Your Photo Session
My favorite part of being a photographer is seeing my clients feeling happy, relaxed, and confident in front of the camera.
And the secret to that confidence? Good preparation.
To help you get the most out of your upcoming photo session, I’ve created this detailed guide with practical tips on how to prepare — from choosing outfits to getting the kids ready, and even how to prep your home for a newborn photoshoot.
Wardrobe Tips for Your Photo Session
Choosing the right outfit can make a huge difference in your photos.
Opt for a color palette of muted tones and light neutrals. Avoid large floral prints, stripes, or plaid.
Select 1–2 outfits to make the most of the natural light without spending time changing clothes.
Skip clothing with visible logos or branding.
Dress for the season and location of your photoshoot.
Ensure clothes are clean, wrinkle-free, and stain-free.
For young children, plan to change them into their outfits upon arrival to avoid messes.
Ladies: Choose proper undergarments for sheer fabrics (seamless, strapless, or styled intentionally).
Bring accessories (hats, sunglasses, jewelry) to add personality to your look.
Most importantly, wear something that feels like “you” — authenticity photographs best.
Hair, Skin & Nails
Looking polished boosts your confidence and results in better images.
Book any haircuts or color touch-ups at least one week before your session.
Professional hair and makeup are highly recommended. If doing it yourself, go a bit bolder than your everyday look.
Bring along lip balm or lipstick for touch-ups.
Use sunscreen during summer shoots to avoid sunburn.
Keep nails neat and clean, especially for close-ups.
Remove temporary tattoos and colorful bandaids from kids in advance.
Preparing Children for Family Photography
Family photos should be a fun, low-stress experience.
Talk to your kids a few days ahead, show them a photo of me, and explain what to expect.
Stick to regular nap and meal schedules — avoid surprises.
Feed everyone before the session and bring snacks and water (non-messy options).
Pack a comfort toy or blanket — ideally one you don’t mind appearing in the photos.
Newborn Photography at Home
Home sessions create a warm, meaningful backdrop for newborn photos.
Try feeding the baby 30 minutes before the session to help them relax or sleep.
No need for a spotless house — I’ll help stage photo areas and move distractions.
Avoid baby baths 2–3 days before the shoot to prevent flaky skin.
We’ll shoot in nursery, bedroom, or living room — rooms full of family memories. Choose outfits that complement these spaces.
Timing & Natural Light
My sessions are scheduled to make the most of the best natural light — typically during golden hour (sunrise or sunset).
Please arrive on time, ready to go. Even a short delay can reduce the quality of light and limit what we can capture.
My Approach: Authentic, Natural Photography
Don’t worry if you feel awkward in front of the camera — most people do! I’ll guide you with natural poses and gentle direction to help you feel at ease and enjoy the experience.
My goal is to capture your authentic moments, with beautiful, timeless images that you'll cherish for years to come.
